Moe is Me by MOE

Hello, my name is Moe.  I am a five-foot-tall snake plant, originally from Nigeria, living on the 59th floor of a beautiful apartment in downtown Miami. You would think I would be grateful, but for me, this is a step down.  Or rather, a few flights down.

Six months ago, I was on top of the world.  My home was an apartment on the 74th floor and I felt like I was on top of the world.  I had a perfect spot – close to the patio door where I could look down on the little people and plants.  My plant parent was good to me, making sure I had adequate light and water so I could grow strong and healthy.  And then my world fell apart.  My plant parent was moving away and could not take me with her.  Moe is me, I wailed silently.  I don’t want to move and leave my beautiful home.  I hate change.  What will become of me?

My new mama seemed nice, but I was worried.  She kept asking questions about how to take care of me – not a good sign, I thought.  And even more distressing, we had to take the elevator DOWN to get to my new home.  I’m not a snob but this was not good at all.  I feared that my life was going downhill.

But my fears were in vain.  My new mama turned out to be wonderful – she is kind, she takes good care of me, and she talks to me regularly.  All those questions she was asking of my former mother was to make sure she knew how best to care for me.

I also love my new home.  I am once again sitting in my favorite spot near to the patio door, soaking up the sun and still able to look down on the little people and plants.  But what’s even better, from my new home, I can see things a lot more clearly.  I am more in touch with the plants I can see from my lovely home, and they can see me as well.   I feel like I am part of a much bigger world – one beyond my lovely home – because I am not so high up and far from everything.

Six months ago, I feared change.  But now, I can say that change is not a bad thing.  Besides, from my home on the 59th floor, I still feel like I am on top of the world.
